.: Forestry Plan History

At the Spread Eagle Home Owners Association meeting in September of 2005, members voted to fund a study to be conducted by the Colorado State Forest Service. That study resulted in the Forest Stewardship Plan presented to the Spread Eagle HOA in June of 2006. It is a management plan in which owners can voluntarily apply to their properties, helping them to be good stewards of the forest and associated resources. A vote during the HOA meeting in September of 2006 endorsed what has been termed the "Forestry Plan", and it remains in effect today.

.: Forestry Plan Objectives

  • To identify and mitigate wildfire hazards to the property.
  • To improve overall forest health, growth and vigor.
  • To minimize potential damage from insects and diseases.
  • To maintain or enhance aesthetic qualities.

.: The Purpose For This Web Site

This web site is the result of long hours of thought and work. For the past several years the HOA meeting agenda included something about the forestry plan and it seems like there was plenty of support, but little progress in the way of results was the norm. We have a forestry committee but not much organization or leadership, of which I must confess (sorry, it's John Miller writing this) I am at fault. After the HOA meeting in 2007 I thought I should set the example and take care of business on our property. I had a notion to take some before and after pictures of the work and thought it would help other owners if they could see what I could see.

The pictures tell a lot but there is another message that comes from the progress chart shown on the left of this page, and it's telling you that the forestry plan is a work in progress, it's important, and it warrants your attention and effort. This web site will continue to convey this message as it is updated with progress reports. The response at the 2008 HOA meeting was very good even though there was a very low attendance. Even with that there were four (4) owners who committed to participating in the plan and were ready to start the process. That's very encouraging! .

A final word of caution, this site is full of heavy graphics. If you don't have high speed internet you'll likely get bogged down, especially on the Lot 26 Project. I hope you get a lot out of the site and if you have any comments or suggestons, and especially if you've had the CSFS confirm your property is in compliance, please shoot me an e-mail at John.Miller@SpreadEagleOwners.org. I'm pretty good to read them.

This image was produced using the lot plats image from the Spread Eagle HOA web site and the Fuels Treatments graphic taken from the study report, and reflects conditions at the time of the 2006 study. The images did not match perfectly but they were close enough for our purposes here.

In order to achieve the objectives noted in the forestry plan all lots and open space areas within the boundaries of the Spread Eagle development need to have defensive space established around all dwellings, tree thinning as identified by the State Forest Service,  and the removal of "slash" or the waste byproducts such as tree limbs, tree tops and exposed tree trunks. This overlay reflects the current status of the plan showing lots that have been inspected by the State Forest Service and are in compliance, and lots that have no trees or slash materials. The goal is to achieve 100% compliance and paint the entire overlay blue.
